I came across Tim Carey a few years ago and was fascinated by his dynamic technique, so when he started classes online I was keen to discover all of his secrets (about the glass 😉).

Tim Carey has spent many years working with Judson Studios, Narcissus Quagliata and Bullseye Glass and teaches the technique that they developed together in order to build 'The Resurrection Window' in Kansas. The design was originally going to be a stained glass window, but at Judson they soon realised that making such a large window using that traditional method was going to be technically extremely difficult and impossible to do in the timescale. So, they brought in Narcissus Quagliata to help them develop the fused glass technique that I was able to learn in this class.

As a project for me, this is still very much a work in progress. It's the kind of technique you need to practice, over months, even years. And, rather than producing work that looks like Tim's, you can use the method to create something that fits with your own style of work. It's like getting a new set of oil pastels to use in your abstract paintings - a teacher can show you how the pastels behave and suggest techniques to try, but they're not going to teach you how to paint or how to use colours, that's up to you.

As of July 2022, I have put this particular project on the back burner. I do have a particularly ambitious image in mind, but I don't have the skills to execute it yet. I am still working on colour combinations and one of my next projects is to learn how to paint on glass using traditional enamels.

If you get the chance, watch "Holy Frit" the movie directed by Justin Monroe. Apparently Justin moved in next door to Tim, just at the beginning of this project and said 'we have to film this'. It's a fun, fascinating watch, even if you're not particularly interested in glass. https://holyfrit.com

In this visceral three-year race against time, Tim Carey, a talented, yet unknown LA artist bluffs his way into winning the commission to create the largest stained-glass window of its kind. The problem is, he doesn’t know how to make it. After a desperate search, he finds someone who might have the answer…a world famous glass maestro, named, Narcissus Quagliata. As the fates of three communities hang in the balance, Narcissus arrives like a storm, and everything changes.
